The Emporer Franz Joseph of Austria required sirnames of his subjects in the 1700's., but the Russian Czar did not sent the census taker around to list sirnames until about 1820. ( It helped to collect taxes and do military conscription) Before that Jews called themselves Given Name ben {son of} Fathers Name. Many took names describing the city they came from (Weiner from Vienna) Census takers did not allow Jews to take names of Russian cities as that would have tended to give them status as Russians. Some of the names assigned were ridiculing, referring to an interst in money (gold berg.mountain) Bribes would get good names.
Abraham commplied with this law, taking his mother's name Shulamid (Russianized to Shulka). Shulkin is a matronymic Shula's child/kind like Jackson is a patronymic. The name is a common one in parts of Russia. The above data was taken from the Minsk Archive lists, which the Russian government published every 6-10 years in an effort to enforce the sirname law
An exception to the Jewish disdain for sirnames was that Rabbinical Scholars took names even back in Medievel times identifying themselves as authors of books, etc. Often they took the name of a patron who subsidized their studies. Rabbi Eliezer who eventually became an Edelman is an example.

The Emporer Franz Joseph of Austria required sirnames of his subjects in the 1700's., but the Russian Czar did not sent the census taker around to list sirnames until about 1820. ( It helped to collect taxes and do military conscription) Before that Jews called themselves Given Name ben {son of} Fathers Name. Many took names describing the city they came from (Weiner from Vienna) Census takers did not allow Jews to take names of Russian cities as that would have tended to give them status as Russians. Some of the names assigned were ridiculing, referring to an interst in money (gold berg.mountain) Bribes would get good names.
Abraham commplied with this law, taking his mother's name Shulamid (Russianized to Shulka). Shulkin is a matronymic Shula's child/kind like Jackson is a patronymic. The name is a common one in parts of Russia. The above data was taken from the Minsk Archive lists, which the Russian government published every 6-10 years in an effort to enforce the sirname law
An exception to the Jewish disdain for sirnames was that Rabbinical Scholars took names even back in Medievel times identifying themselves as authors of books, etc. Often they took the name of a patron who subsidized their studies. Rabbi Eliezer who eventually became an Edelman is an example.
